Background

Council has made several resolutions in relation to dual naming and acknowledgement of local Aboriginal culture.

In 2018, the dual naming of Council wards with Aboriginal names occurred with the following names adopted:

Ashfield – Djarrawunang (Magpie)

Balmain – Baludarri (Leather jacket)

Leichhardt – Gulgadya (Grass Tree)

Marrickville – Midjuburi (Lillypilly)

Stanmore – Damun (Port Jackson Fig)

In 2024, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee was consulted on this issue and advised that dual naming of inclusive playgrounds is appropriate.

At its meeting on 12 November 2024, Council endorsed in principle the renaming of the new inclusive Inner West playgrounds, as recommended by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee.

What are the five parks and ovals?

Baludarri Playground at King George Park, Rozelle

Gulgadya Playground at Richard Murden Reserve, Haberfield

Djarrawunang Playground at Yeo Park, Ashfield

Damun Playground at Camperdown Park, Camperdown

Midjuburi Playground at Steel Park, South Marrickville
