Project updates

Project details

King George Park play space is a beautiful foreshore play space located along the Bay Run near the Iron Cove Bridge.

The existing play space was constructed in 2011 and and includes swings, a sandpit, slides, a large rope climbing structure, flying fox and more. Supportive amenities include toilets, BBQs, picnic tables and drinking fountains. A sports ground and carpark upgrade were completed in May 2023 with two new accessible parking spots near the play space entry.

What's happening now?

We want to make sure we are creating high quality fully inclusive play spaces and recreational facilities for all children to experience the joy and benefits of play.

That’s why we're partnering with the Touched by Olivia Foundation to deliver five inclusive play spaces across the Inner West. The first of these is at King George Park.

We want to co-design this play space with everyone that will use it. Parents, grandparents, carers, local residents and the real play experts - children and young people.

We'll be working with local schools and service providers to gather ideas, and we need you to spread the word too. Check out the tailored online survey for parents, grandparents and other carers and complete the 'how do you like to play' drawing activity for a chance to win a $50 gift voucher.

In May 2022 Council committed to establishing an inclusive play space in every Inner West ward.

A location study was completed by the Touched by Olivia Foundation to identify suitable locations across the LGA.

King George Park play space was confirmed as the first flagship inclusive play space to be delivered over a four-year program.

Ensuring that people of all abilities, ages and cultural backgrounds can access and enjoy our play spaces is important to us and is always front of mind. This play space upgrade will follow the principles set out in the NSW Government's "Everyone Can Play" guide.

It's important to note that while inclusive play spaces can't provide every experience for everyone, we aim to provide play spaces with something that each person can access and enjoy.

Additional guidelines the design will comply with include:

Council has already committed to a few important changes to the play space area:

  • Graded entry to play area and better connection to family precinct
  • New shade structures and shade trees to be installed
  • Play space to be reinvigorated with new softfall surfaces and new play equipment
  • Free-form benches around play space perimeter to provide a large amount of seating

These commitments are part of the King George Park Master Plan - read more about it online.

How the community provided feedback

Highlights from school engagement sessions

Council staff and consultants recently met with SRC members from Orange Grove Public School. The students provided valuable insights into what inclusion means to them and creative ideas for the play space - baby swings, older swings and 'elderly' swings (with foot rests!), lots of trampolines, parallel bars, monkey bars and 'hamicks'.

Have a look at the drawings the students created.
