Richard Murden Reserve is a beautiful open-space with multiple facilities located in Haberfield.

Council is designing an accessible play space at Richard Murden Reserve and at the same time we're also starting to develop a new 10 year plan for the whole reserve.

New inclusive play space

We want to make sure we are creating high quality fully inclusive play spaces and recreational facilities for all children to experience the joy and benefits of play.

That’s why we're partnering with the Touched by Olivia Foundation to deliver five inclusive play spaces across the Inner West. The second of these is at Richard Murden Reserve.

We want to co-design this play space with everyone that will use it. Parents, grandparents, carers, local residents and the real play experts - children and young people.

We'll be working with local schools and service providers to gather ideas, and we need you to spread the word too.

In May 2022 Council committed to establishing an inclusive play space in every Inner West ward.

A location study was completed by the Touched by Olivia Foundation to identify suitable locations across the LGA.

Richard Murden Reserve play space was confirmed as the second inclusive play space to be delivered over a four-year program.

Ensuring that people of all abilities, ages and cultural backgrounds can access and enjoy our play spaces is important to us and is always front of mind. This play space upgrade will follow the principles set out in the NSW Government's "Everyone Can Play" guide.

It's important to note that while inclusive play spaces can't provide every experience for everyone, we aim to provide play spaces with something that each person can access and enjoy.

Additional guidelines the design will comply with include:

Council has already committed to a few important changes to the play space area:

  • A fence to the playspace
  • Renovation of the amenities building to improve accessibility

What's in scope

  • Types of play experience/equipment
  • Shade sails
  • New bubblers
  • New paths
  • Seating - reused or new
  • BBQs - reused or new
  • New landscaping
  • New surfacing e.g rubber, mulch, sand
  • Fencing
  • Toilet upgrades

What's out of scope

  • Play space location
  • Timing and budget for construction

The first of the inclusive design is at King George Park and you can read about the project here.

Developing a 10 year plan

We are at the early stages of developing a 10 year Plan of Management and Master Plan. We want to hear from you to help inform the plan and invite you to let us know what is working, what can be improved and what is missing.

A Plan of Management is a useful tool to provide strategic planning and governance for the management and use of land. The plans set out objectives and performance targets for community land and promote active land management.

Councils are required to develop plans of management under Local Government Act 1993.

A Plan of Management (POM) is a guiding document which directs the future planning, management and use of the park. The POM is accompanied by the Master Plan which outlines the vision and actions required for improvement over the next 10 years.
