Council acknowledges and respects the fortitude, endurance, optimism and commitment that Vietnamese refugees and families have brought to the Inner West, enriching the social, cultural and economic life of our community over many decades. These contributions reflect not only personal journeys of resilience and hope, but a deep commitment to community, family and belonging.

Inner West Council resolved to create a public artwork in September 2025, with the intention of it being installed by April 2026. A design was commissioned and brought to the community for feedback from 28 January to 13 February 2026.

Feedback was sought on the draft concept design through an online survey, email and with two in-person community pop-up sessions. The first session was targeted to the local Vietnamese community, and the second was open to the broader community.

There have also been further enquiries made by community members to Council after the formal community engagement had closed, expressing a mix of opinions.

Council is committed to ensuring we consider all community feedback thoroughly and respectfully. Given the variety of views expressed, Council is not progressing with the lotus artwork concept.

Council seeks to honour and celebrate this enduring contribution through the development of an appropriate public artwork and commemoration, created in recognition of lived experience and in partnership with the Vietnamese community of the Inner West.
