Project details

To recognise 50 years since the end of the Vietnam War, we are proposing to install a monument in the heart of Little Vietnam in Marrickville. After early engagement with our Vietnamese community, we are now seeking wider community feedback on the monument and proposed location.

About the proposed sculpture

The lotus flower is Vietnam’s national flower. It symbolises purity, resilience, and optimism. Its ability to emerge from muddy water to bloom with beauty represents the Vietnamese people’s strength in overcoming adversity. The sculpture’s composition evokes a place of rest: solid, peaceful, and safe. It offers visitors a moment of stillness within the space, a place to pause before returning to life’s wider journey. The sculptures proposed diameter is 1.2 metres and height is one metre.

The memorial speaks quietly of resilience, hope, the strength found in calm and the opportunity for new beginnings. The memorial will be an artistic addition to Council's Little Villages project and will include an interpretative panel in English and Vietnamese on the meaning of the sculpture.

About the proposed location

The proposed location of the monument is on the corner of Byrnes Street and Illawarra Road in Marrickville.
