25 May 2021

Inner West Council has completed the cycleway linking Petersham Station and King Street, Newtown.

This completes Section 2 of regional bike route 7 - Lewisham to Newtown. Regional Route 7 (RR7) is an important east-west route between Summer Hill and Newtown which links the inner west to Sydney CBD. The project is funded as part of the NSW Government's cycleway program in response to COVID-19.The latest link is 3.8 kilometres and starts at Petersham Station before running along Crystal Street, York Crescent, Gordon Crescent, Douglas Street, Railway Avenue, Trade Street, Baltic Street, Albermarle Street and Eliza Street. Council is upgrading bicycle infrastructure to make it safer and easier for people of all abilities to make every day trips by bike. The NSW Government identified RR7 as a priority route and is funding the development of the upgrade plans.

The concept plans were developed after extensive community engagement. Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said that Council’s Community Satisfaction Surveys repeatedly show that Inner West residents want us to manage traffic better and that road safety was one of their top concerns. “Managing traffic congestion was named as one of the top three challenges facing our local government area in the next ten years,” he said. “Getting more people out riding their bikes safely and easily will go a very long way to achieving that goal for our community,” Mayor Byrne said. “This new cycleway is providing an important link in our bike networks that connect significant destinations - between train stations, schools, parks and libraries,” Mayor Byrne said. Section 1 of this cycleway from Summer Hill to Petersham is about to commence. This link will complete Regional Route 7 (RR7).
