Engagement outcomes

From 2 August to 26 October 2023, the community was consulted to inform the design of the new inclusive playground in King George Park. The consultation methods included:

  • Guliver's Mapping - a qualitative consultation technique wherein children write, draw, or talk about their ideas about a proposed project on a large aerial photograph of the site.
  • Preference surveys - a quantitative consultation technique wherein children vote for their top 3 activities from a prescribed list for a proposed project.
  • Targeted Consultation - qualitative conversations with user groups who accompany children and can offer insights and suggestions for a proposed project.
  • Online survey, online meeting and on-site session - these were open to the general public and promoted through various channels.

The results of this consultation reflect great enthusiasm for the proposed King George Park Inclusive Playground in Rozelle. The resulting Design Brief provides guidance in the design of the Inclusive Playground in order to ensure that the new facilities will be engaging to children and young people. It also encourages multi-generational play.

Concept plan

Changes have been made to the concept plan which are not reflected in the below document. These changes include:

  • The entry path from the carpark was simplified to retain the existing ramp entry
  • One of the spinners was switched out for a 4 way rocker with a supported seat to ensure that more play experiences were provided
  • Additional accessible paths have been added to allow access to the smaller less challenging slide, to the sandplay and water play area, and to the flying fox. This also provides a more direct access to the flying fox with alternative stairs to ensure carers have options to move through the site more quickly if required.
  • The flying fox was upgraded to a double flying fox to allow a greater depth of learning through play with the ability to negotiate races and more opportunity for group play.

Drawing competition

The community was invited to take part in a drawing competition either online or at Marrickville and Balmain Libraries. Participants were asked to draw their ideal space while thinking about a recent time having fun outdoors.

Winners were selected at random and each have won a $50 gift card. The full terms and conditions of the competition can be viewed on the project page.

Congratulations!
