What is a Community Recycling Centre?

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) funds new and enhanced Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) across NSW. CRCs are permanent drop-off centres for common household problem wastes that can't be collected via council kerbside waste and recycling collection services. NSW householders can drop off problem waste at these centres year round, free of charge.

There are two of these centres in the Inner West: in Leichhardt and in St Peters.

What is household problem waste?

Household problem wastes are potentially harmful household products that should not be disposed of in your household red-lidded garbage bin. They include cleaning products, paints, pool chemicals, garden products and hobby chemicals. The community can use two convenient collection systems to safely dispose of household problem wastes, free of charge. Selected items are accepted at each drop-off.

  • Community Recycling Centres are permanent drop-off facilities, open year round. Used to safely dispose of selected common household problem wastes such as paint, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, motor and cooking oils, car and household batteries, fluorescent tubes and globes, and smoke detectors.
  • Household Chemical CleanOut is a drop-off event and mobile collection service. Used to safely dispose of a range of household chemical products, including household cleaners, pool and hobby chemicals and pesticides. CleanOut events are held at various locations in NSW on specified dates throughout the year.

You can regularly drop off most chemicals at the Community Recycling Centres every weekend. Gather all unwanted problem household waste and drop them off to your closest CRC frequently.
