Project background

In late 2021, Transport for NSW released a Review of Environmental Factors report for the Sydney Park Junction project. The project aims to:

  • Improve the southern gateway to King Street, Newtown by reducing traffic capacity on King Street, Princes Highway, and Sydney Park Road.
  • Enhance pedestrian and cyclist access and improve the urban environment along these roads-connecting Sydney Park, St Peters Station, and nearby neighbourhoods.

One key proposal was to remove traffic signals at the intersection of May Street and Princes Highway to allow only left-in and left-out vehicle movements.

What is happening now?

Transport for NSW has scheduled these changes for early 2026. This includes:

  • Removing the right turn from Princes Highway into May Street.
  • Removing the right turn from May Street into Princes Highway.

To better manage traffic and access in the St Peters Triangle, Inner West Council is proposing changes to how vehicles move through the area. Currently, drivers use May Street, Campbell Road, and Hutchinson Street to enter the Triangle. Council plans to reverse the direction of Applebee Street and Lackey Street which will allow drivers to enter the Triangle from Campbell Road via May Street.

What can you influence?

To better manage traffic flows and access impacted by Transport for NSW changes, Council is proposing to:

  • Change the one-way direction in Applebee Street and Lackey Street – cars will travel the opposite way. Drivers will enter the Triangle from Campbell Road via May Street in addition to existing access from Hutchinson Street via Campbell Road which will be unchanged.
  • Applebee Street between Hutchinson Street and May Street will become two-way which will result in a loss of 7 parking spaces.
