Project updates

At its meeting on Tuesday 9 December 2025 Council considered a report from the Local Transport Forum and made the following decision:

That Council receive and adopt the recommendations of the Local Transport Forum meeting held on 17 November 2025, with the following amendments:

...b) An additional point 5 be added to the recommendations for Item 4: Schwebel Street - Proposed one-way eastbound treatment at Schwebel Street between Station Street/Leofrene Avenue and Junction Road, that reads, “That Council investigate and consult with residents and businesses about installing angle parking on the north side of Schwebel Street between Station Street and Leofrene Avenue and report back to a future Local Transport Forum.”

At its meeting on Monday 17 November the Local Transport Forum (formerly Local Traffic Committee) will consider a report including consultation outcomes and make the following recommendations: t

1.That Schwebel Street between Station Street / Leofrene Avenue and Junction Road,

Marrickville be approved to be converted into a one-way in the eastbound direction.

2. That a threshold treatment (ie kerb blisters and speed cushion) be installed on

Schwebel Street at Junction Street to reduce the speed of traffic and provide a physical

narrowing to highlight the one-way section of Schwebel Street for oncoming motorists.

3. That a threshold treatment (ie kerb blisters and speed cushion) be installed on

Schwebel Street at High Street to reduce the speed of traffic and provide a physical

narrowing to highlight the one-way section of Schwebel Street for left turning motorists.

Project details

We are asking for your feedback on ways to improve traffic flow and safety on Schwebel Street.

Schwebel Street, between Station Street and Junction Street, is very narrow. This makes it hard for two cars to pass each other without one needing to stop or move into a driveway, parking space, or intersection.

What are we proposing?

At its meeting on 17 June 2025, Council decided to ask the community for feedback on four options:

A. Make Schwebel Street one-way heading east between Illawarra Road and Carrington Road

B. Make part of Schwebel Street one-way heading east between Leofrene Avenue/Station Street and Junction Street

C. Add formal passing bays between Station Street and High Street.

D. Keep things the same - no traffic changes
