What is this project about?

Every day, thousands of children across the Inner West walk, ride, scoot or are driven to and from school. We want to improve the safety of everyone on these journeys and we want your help to do that. We are focusing on every school in the Inner West Local Government area and looking at how we can improve pedestrian and traffic safety around each school. We want to know what safety issues you and your children experience on school journeys.

The feedback we receive will help inform future upgrades to footpaths and roads around your school.

Project scope & Council's responsibilities

The project focus is limited to the streets immediately surrounding each school to ensure proposed improvements are practical, affordable and deliverable. Concentrating on nearby streets allows us to develop realistic proposals that can be implemented. This approach helps ensure improvements respond directly to school‑related safety and access issues, while still allowing for meaningful, visible outcomes for the community.

Inner West Council is responsible for:

  • Footpaths and shared paths
  • Pedestrian crossings (excluding signalised crossings)
  • Local roads (most streets in our neighbourhoods) including:
    • Traffic calming measures (e.g. speed humps, kerb extensions)
    • Road surface condition
    • Line marking and signage on local roads
  • Parking management and parking restrictions
  • Footpath maintenance and accessibility upgrades

Inner West Council does play a role in advocating to different agencies for changes or improvements.

State agencies are responsible for:

  • Traffic lights
  • Street lighting
  • State roads (significant road that carries traffic from one region to another)
  • Public transport including bus routes and timetables
  • Anti‑social behaviour
  • School crossing supervisors (lollipop staff)
  • School zone enforcement and some school-specific road rules
  • Upgrades within school grounds
  • Private property issues

Next steps

Your insights along with other data will be used to develop proposals for each school. There will be another opportunity to provide feedback during the public exhibition of the proposals. Everyone who provides feedback will be notified when the proposals are open for community comment.
