Proposed Expansion of Marion Street Car Park, Leichhardt


Council is proposing to demolish the cottages at No.9 and No.11 Marion Street, Leichhardt, to create additional parking.

These two cottages are owned by Council and were previously used as office space, in the centre of the Marion Street car park site. They are now in disrepair with high estimated costs to maintain them. As the cottages are not fit for modern offices or other interim uses, it is recommended that Council demolish the cottages and use the space for additional parking.

This expansion is expected to create 22 new parking spaces for the community and Council staff. This will

  • 15 spaces “2P 8am-8pm Mon-Fri Authorised Council Vehicles Excepted”
  • Six spaces “Area Closed to Public 7:30am-5pm Mon-Fri Authorised Council Permits Only; 2P Public Car Park 5pm-8pm”
  • One space on-street in Marion Street “2P Ticket 8am-6pm Mon-Sat; 4P Ticket 6pm-10pm Mon-Sat, 8am-10pm Sun; Authorised Council Vehicles Excepted”

What happens next?

A report, including feedback from the community, will be considered by Council’s Local Traffic Committee at a meeting on 1 June 2017. The Committee’s recommendations will then be considered by Council at a meeting on the 27 June 2017 when a final decision will be made.

  • Council resolves to demolish cottages

    Council considered a report which outlined alternatives for the cottages at a meeting on 27 February 2018. At the meeting it was determined that Council:

    • Demolish the former cottages at 9 and 11 Marion Street Leichhardt and replace with a parking area under the SEPP (Infrastructure) 2007;
    • Identify a suitable permanent location for a Blak Douglas commissioned artwork; and
    • Provide a suitable budget for the artwork in the 2018/19 budget.

  • Council reverses decision to demolish cottages

    At a meeting on 21 November 2017, Council considered a Notice of Motion to rescind the resolution to demolish the cottages. The rescission was carried with the following motion:

    THAT a report be brought to the February 2018 Ordinary meeting on the opportunity, costs and timeline for conversion of cottages 9 and 11 Marion St to a community purpose. The consideration on what that community purpose that should be to include: a Community Centre for Leichhardt Youth; artist studios and art gallery/cultural space; a general community space, housing for low income housing or other appropriate community uses.
