Council is committed to supporting and encouraging the use of electric vehicles in the Inner West.

Inner West Council has secured funding to roll-out 136 public electric vehicle charging ports across our community over the next 12 months.

There are 95 marked parking spaces proposed. This engagement is to understand the Community’s views on the changing parking controls of these 95 spaces.

The new chargers will range from seven kilowatts to 60 kilowatts and will include pole-mounted and “kiosk” charging stations. They will be installed at kerbside locations throughout the Inner West to help our community transition away from petrol powered cars to electric vehicles.

The provision of public charging is essential in the Inner West as many of our residents do not have off-street parking.

All chargers will be installed by April 2025 and will be open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The EV charging stations are fully funded by our partners and NSW Government grants.

In May 2023 Council adopted the Powering Ahead - Inner West Electric Vehicle Encouragement Strategy

In July 2023, Council issued a public charging Expression of Interest (EOI) to determine the various market factors that should be assessed in developing an Inner West EV public charging network.

In September 2023, Council issued an Request for Quote (RFQ) to partner with up to three public charging providers to install kerbside public charging across the Inner West LGA.

In November 2023, Council selected 3 charging providers:

  • EVSE (trading as EVE Australia)
  • EVX, and
  • PLUS ES

Council supported our three partners in lodging applications for the NSW State Government kerbside charging grants (November 2023) which were awarded in May 2024.

How was the locations plan developed?

The plan has been developed with consideration of:

  • Capacity of the electrical grid
  • Areas with high EV uptake and low access to off-street parking
  • Site selection criteria to minimize inconvenience for residents (e.g. avoiding placing ports outside houses wherever possible); and
  • Safety and accessibility requirements
