Locations of chargers

• Where are the chargers located?

• Chargers are located across Inner West with a focus around town centres, parks and older strata buildings with no access to charging. View the map below for locations.

• How are locations chosen?

• The locations have been chosen based on a set of criteria which include:

  • Capacity of the adjacent electrical grid
  • Areas with high EV uptake and low access to off-street parking
  • Locations which minimise inconvenience to residents (e.g. avoiding placing ports outside houses wherever possible)
  • Safety and accessibility

  The locations have also been considered and approved by the State Government as part of its funding process.

• Can I nominate a street for kerbsides charging?

• This round of kerbside chargers is funded predominantly by the NSW EV Kerbside Grant. Locations of chargers were finalised during the application assessment stage, Generally, the sites cannot be changed unless major safety and accessibility concerns are raised. If significant community concern is raised we would discuss this with the State’s grant approval team with a view to removing the charger.

  Opportunities to nominate locations for kerbside EV chargers could accommodated in the future depending on EV uptake.

• Will the chargers be available in carparks?

• This engagement focuses on kerbsides EV charging only. Council is current going through an assessment process to secure EV charging partners for Council car parks. Once appointed, Council will negotiate locations of carpark EV chargers.

Parking restrictions

• Will each EV charging port have a dedicated “EV charging only” parking space?

• Most EV chargers will have at least one allocated marked space. There are 41 charging ports proposed without dedicated marked spaces. These would be installed by PLUS ES and are shown on the interactive map (refer to the drop-down options for layers in the top left corner of the map). These unmarked spaces are part of a trial to promote opportunity charging to help us determine whether future ports need to be marked for EVs only.

• What if my charging socket is on the passenger side of the car?

• Please note that all vehicles must be parked lawfully regardless of charging needs. There are chargers provided in areas with 90-degree parking that is suitable for EV charging socket on the passenger side of the car.

EV charging infrastructure

• What type of chargers are being installed?

• Each provider will be installing different chargers.

  EVSE: 22kW (3 phase) chargers and one 60kW DC chargers. All chargers will have dual sockets.

  EVX: Dual socket 22kW (per socket) pole-mounted charging stations.

  PLUS ES: 22kW AC single port pole-mounted chargers.

• How long does charging take?

• The time it takes to charge an EV is dependent on the vehicle type, current state of charge when plugging in and the type of chargers.

  Generally, to charge an average EV (with a 50-70kW battery) to 70% full:

  • 7 kW AC charger will take 6-8 hours;
  • 22kW AC will take 4-5 hours;
  • 22kW DC will take 3-5 hours;
  • 60-75kW DC charger will take 60-80 minutes; and
  • 90 kW DC will take 45-60 minutes.

Using public EV chargers

• How can I use the public chargers?

• All chargers except for EVSE’s 60kW charger are BYO cables. Each provider has their own associated app which allows you to charge your car.

• Can I pre-book the chargers?

• Currently, this is only available for EVSE chargers. Our other providers are currently looking at updating their platforms to include pre-booking features.

• How do I know when the chargers are available?

• The providers’ apps will show if chargers are in-use. Additionally, platforms such as PlugShare show real-time updates on the status of each charger.

• When can I use the chargers?

• All chargers with marked spaces can be accessed 24/7 and can be used as long as the parking space is not in use or undergoing maintenance.

  Access to chargers without marked spaces will be dependent on the availability of kerb space.

• How do I pay?

• Payments are made through the providers’ platform where you can link your preferred debit/credit card to your account.

• How much will it cost?

• The providers have different pricing models.

  EVX will charge their customers $0.50 per kWh and if you are parked in a metered parking area, you will also automatically be charged the parking rates applicable to the parking space. This information will be presented on the app prior to starting the charging session.

  For EVSE and PLUS ES, their pricing models vary from time to time, much like petrol stations. However, prices also vary throughout the day. It will be cheaper during off-peak periods and more expensive during peak periods.

  Please be aware that a penalty rate will be applied should your car be parked while fully charged.

Charging etiquette

• Do I have to stay with my car?

• No, you do not need to stay with your car while it is charging as long as it is safe to leave your car. However, please be aware that a penalty rate will be applied should your car be parked while fully charged.

• What if the chargers are not working?

• Each charger will have a number you can call to report any issues. Alternatively, you can report the issues through their apps.
