Project details

Council wants to honour and celebrate the long standing relationship between the Inner West community and the people of Portugal by naming a Portuguese precinct in Petersham. We are asking the community to have their say on the name and geographical location of the precinct.

Background

The Portuguese community has a strong connection to Petersham which spans the last 40 years. This legacy includes developing businesses, creating employment and sharing culture and traditions with the broader community. Portuguese cuisine, culture and traditions have added a richness and diversity to the social fabric of the area.

The Portuguese Consulate General of Australia requested that Council acknowledge the connection between the Portuguese community and the Inner West by formally naming a Portuguese precinct in Petersham. In early May, Council engaged with Portuguese businesses, community organisations and Petersham businesses also asking them to indicate preferred names and geographic locations for the precinct. The outcomes of that engagement have been incorporated into the design of this community survey.

Have your say

Council is seeking your feedback on the name and geographic location for the Portuguese precinct in Petersham. You are invited to provide feedback:

  • Online, using the Petersham Portuguese precinct survey; or
  • By mail, addressed to Inner West Council, PO Box 14, Petersham 2049. Please mark your submission - Petersham Portuguese precinct.

Last day to provide feedback is 25 June 2019.

The Naming a Portuguese Precinct in Petersham survey has concluded.

What happens next?

The feedback received will be incorporated into recommendations for the name and geographic location of the precinct and be considered by the elected Council. All those who provided feedback will be advised when the decision is made by Council.
