At its meeting on 29 April 2025 Council endorsed the draft Media and Social Media Policy for public exhibition.

What is this policy about?

Inner West Council recognises that social media is an essential communication and engagement channel for Councillors. Council has reviewed the Councillor Media and Social Media policies and the Office of Local Government (OLG) Model Media Policy and Model Social Media Policy for Councillors. It is proposed to consolidated the existing Policies into one Councillor Media and Social Media Policy to ensure all media policies for Councillors are easily accessed. Additionally, it incorporates certain sections of the Councillor Expenses and Facilities Policy that deal with the provision of communications support to Councillors. It also includes certain additional policy considerations and obligations from the Model Media Policy and Model Social Media Policy produced by the Office of Local Government (OLG).

The purpose of this Policy is to provide a framework to assist Councillors with media relations and outline processes, guidelines and issues relating to engagement with the media and use of social media by Councillors.

This policy applies to all Councillors.
