Background

Council is proposing to create new netball courts and facilities in Richard Murden Reserve, Haberfield to address a need for high quality netball training spaces identified by the former Leichhardt Council.

Council previously investigated developing these facilities at Shields Playground in Darley Road, Leichhardt, but this option was not pursued due to extensive community opposition.

Following the Council amalgamations other options for the location of netball facilities were examined across the new Inner West Council area and it was determined that Richard Murden Reserve, Haberfield, was the most suitable site.

The proposed plan

There are two stages of the proposed plan:


PHASE 1 - EXPECTED CONSTRUCTION 2018

PHASE 2 - EXPECTED CONSTRUCTION 2019 ONWARD
  • Conversion of existing basketball court to three netball courts*
  • New picnic shelter with table, seating and storage
  • New bike racks
  • New basketball half court
  • New planting and landscaping
  • New water refill station/dog water bowl
  • New bins
  • Investigation of parking improvements
  • Realign shared path adjacent to Hawthorne Canal
  • Removal of existing path
  • New fencing (between edge of the courts and the new shared path)
  • Removal of one fitness station ( to be replaced in Phase 2)
  • New shared path lighting
  • New trees
  • New public toilet with solar panel (subject to the outcome of community engagement)
  • Relocation of a fitness station as part of the GreenWay Missing Links Master Plan Works.

* Netball court 3 is subject to funding in 2018/19


Improving parking

As part of Phase 1, Council will investigate options for improved parking arrangements along Hawthorne Parade. There will be further community engagement on any proposed changes.


Access to the courts

The proposed facilities will be hard surface training courts with bookings available during weekday afternoons and evenings. Netball clubs based in the former Leichhardt Local Government Area will be given booking priority as per the Council resolution of 23 August 2016.
