Bike parking
- Bike parking would be managed through clearly marked, designated parking areas in key locations, helping keep footpaths clear, reduce clutter, and ensure shared bikes are left in safe and accessible places.
At its meeting on 11 In March 2025, Inner West Council resolved to develop a strategy to guide the growth and management of shared e-bikes and we want your input.
In late 2025, the NSW Parliament passed legislation giving councils greater control around the management of shared e-bikes in our community.
Under the legislation, bike share operators will need to obtain approval from Transport for NSW to operate in NSW and then obtain an authorisation from local councils to provide bikes on the streets.
The approval by Transport for NSW would apply consistent standards for issues like bike safety and compliance, helmet provision, insurance and data requirements as well as a methodology to determine the number of bikes based on use.

Transport for NSW is changing the way e-micromobility sharing schemes operate in NSW.
They are seeking feedback from sharing scheme service providers, councils and landowners on draft regulations and guidance materials to support a new regulatory framework. These reforms will give new powers to Transport for NSW and local authorities to control minimum standards for operators and support the safe use of e-bikes for communities.
Submissions are open now and feedback closes on Monday 4 May 2026.

We want your input into our local strategy to manage this popular transport option. Inner West Council acknowledges the impacts of shared bikes for our community and we have heard your concerns about bikes parked outside your homes and blocking footpaths.
Shared bikes are becoming an increasingly common part of how people get around.
Once the NSW Government reforms have been finalised, Council will develop a strategy to guide the growth and management of shared e-bikes. We’re seeking your input on broad principles to help accommodate shared bikes in an orderly, fair and practical way and on the three components outlined below.
Enforcement would occur through geofencing technology that automatically limits or disables devices in designated areas, supported by operator compliance requirements and council‑led monitoring and penalties where rules are breached.
Last day to provide feedback is Wednesday 24 June 2026
