What happens next?
Next steps
After the public exhibition, a report including your feedback will be presented to Council for consideration. Everyone who provided feedback will be informed when the report will be considered by Council.
At its meeting on Tuesday 17 March 2026, Council endorsed the revised Good Neighbour Policy for public exhibition.
What is this policy about?
The Good Neighbour Policy explains how Council manages sound and activity issues so residents and businesses can coexist in the Inner West. It sets out who is responsible for handling complaints, how concerns should be raised and how Council works with state agencies to resolve issues before taking formal action. The policy aims to protect neighbourhood amenity while supporting local businesses, creative spaces and community activity.
This policy aims to support live music venues, licensed premises, creative spaces, sporting clubs and local businesses. It recognises the importance of these places to our community and provides reassurance that Council takes a balanced approach supporting both residents and businesses to coexist. Wherever possible, Council will work to help venues and businesses continue operating.
This policy does not apply to construction-related activities or the Development Assessment process, as these are governed by separate legal requirements.
The policy also outlines the roles of key stakeholders including residents, businesses, Council, Police and Liquor & Gaming NSW in managing noise and activity in an urban environment. It explains how Council will prioritise working with all parties to resolve issues in a fair and amicable way before considering any formal enforcement action.
This policy applies to all Councillors, Council Officers and contractors working for Council regardless of whether they are permanent, temporary, full‐time, part‐time or casual. For the purposes of this policy, the term contractor includes on‐hired temporary labour services (agency staff) and sub‐contractors.
What has changed?
Recent changes to NSW laws mean Liquor & Gaming NSW is now responsible for handling sound and activity complaints from licensed venues, not Council. The policy has been updated to reflect this change by clearly separating how complaints about licensed venues and non‑licensed premises are handled, and by explaining the different roles of Liquor & Gaming NSW and Council.
