Project updates
Project details
In response to community concerns, Inner West Council has recently resolved to meet with local residents to discuss issues around fishing activities along Balmain Peninsula.
Council’s General Manager and staff will be available to meet residents and hear their views between 8am-9am on Wednesday 30 August at Illoura Reserve (outside the Fenwick Building).
- Fishlines, hooks and other rubbish is discarded on the foreshores
- Dog safety. In the past two years, Council has received two reports of incidents where a Companion Animal has required surgery after ingesting a discarded hook
- Installed educational signage along foreshore reserves
- From February 2021, increased litter collection service at all foreshore parks to 6 times a week including Saturday
- Designed and installed dedicated fishing line and hook tackle bins. After a 12 month trial, these were removed due to the facts that the bins were used incorrectly and due to their specialised design caused waste management issues. Importantly, waste bins need to be accessible for waste servicing by vehicles and can not be lugged up steep inclines. In addition, the placement of bins should not detract from the visual qualities of the park
- Increased foreshore inspections and maintenance
- The activity of fishing is an important community recreational and cultural activity
- Council has previously considered limiting fishing to on leash parks only. However this was considered impractical due to the difficulty to enforce. Fishing usually takes place throughout the night and early dawn hours when tides and season conditions are favourable
- Council records indicate we have received two complaints in the last 12 months regarding fishing activities along Council foreshore reserves
After the consultation period ends we will report back to Council with the feedback we receive.
