Victoria Road Precinct

We seek feedback on two matters that relate to the Victoria Road Precinct in the Marrickville/Sydenham industrial lands.

  1. Planning issues within the Victoria Road Precinct
  2. Council's recent review of the Marrickville Employment Lands Study

Planning issues within the Victoria Road Precinct

A group of landholders has lodged a proposal with Council to amend the current planning controls within the area known as the Victoria Road Precinct. You can view the planning proposal at Council’s Administration Centre, Marrickville Library or online.

Council submitted the proposal to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DP&E) for assessment through the gateway process. The gateway is a checkpoint where the DP&E determines whether the proposal is justified before further studies are done and resources allocated to the preparation of a plan. If the DP&E permits the proposal to proceed to the next stage, Council will undertake extensive community engagement to gauge opinions, issues and opportunities.

You can view the preliminary planning proposal and associated reports in the document library at Council’s Administration Centre, Marrickville Library, and in the document library on this page.

Next steps:

Council invites community input into the Victoria Road Precinct on services and transport, urban density and design, and the nature and extent of employment lands. This input will be reported to the elected Council after submissions close on 27 February 2015.

Update: On 16/12/14 the Department of Planning and Environment requested Council withdraw the planning proposal to incorporate the recommendations of the Marrickville Employment Lands study and allow for further investigation of the strategic merit of retaining the Victoria Road industrial lands in the context of the broader local government area and subregion. Visit the NSW Department of Planning and Environment's website for further information. Council continues to invite community input into the Victoria Road Precinct to shape its future decision-making.

Marrickville Employment Lands Study Review

Council recently reviewed the Marrickville Employment Lands Study 2008.

The report describes the changing nature of industry in the region and its impact on the future of Marrickville’s employment lands. It shows there is spare capacity for some loss of industrial land, but also highlights the strategic value of Marrickville’s employment lands, particularly the core Marrickville/Sydenham industrial area comprising the Victoria Road Precinct. It broadly recommends that the core Marrickville/Sydenham industrial area be retained with the potential for some live-work and creative industries.

You can view the Study at Council’s Administration Centre, Marrickville Library or online.

Next steps:

Council invites feedback from the community, local businesses and landowners on the findings of the review.

Council will consider community submissions as part of its decision making concerning the Victoria Road Precinct.
