Ryan Park Rain Garden

Council and the Cooks River Alliance are planning a rain garden in Ryan Park that will help to improve stormwater before it flows to the Cooks River and we need your help.

Community engagement will start soon, and we want to hear from you about the park. How you use it, what you know about it and how Council can improve it.

Come along to the site meeting on Saturday 27 February 2016 at 10am for your chance to hear about the rain garden and have your say.

  • Rain garden planning ceases

Council has ceased planning a rain garden for Ryan Park. An assessment of the park’s soil found that the levels of pollutants made it unsuitable for building a rain garden. Instead, the funding has been used to build a rain garden in Murdoch Park, Marrickville.

Thank you very much to everyone who filled out the survey and came along to the site meeting on Saturday. We have received some great information from park users and local residents that will help us to create the best design possible.

You all love the shady trees and the play equipment and friendly atmosphere.

But Council needs to fix the gate, put up signs and patrol the park for dogs off leash, take steps to slow down the cyclists (signs or speed hump) and move the seat near Harrington Street away from the bin. I have notified our Parks...

But Council needs to fix the gate, put up signs and patrol the park for dogs off leash, take steps to slow down the cyclists (signs or speed hump) and move the seat near Harrington Street away from the bin. I have notified our Parks team about the repairs and improvements. The seat will be moved when the rain garden is constructed.

Installing a recycling bin in the park? We do not currently have recycling bins in our parks - unfortunately they always become highly contaminated, but Council will be trialling recycling bins at Camperdown Park soon.

If you see a dog off leash, or a cyclist riding too fast please report it to Council - if you don't tell us we don't know. You can easily contact us through the new apps MyMarrickville or SnapSendSolve.

Everyone at the meeting agreed that the rain garden would be best located on the lower part of the park near Harrington Street, and will be designed as both a stormwater treatment device and nature play area.

Once the draft design is completed it will be available for comment on YourSayMarrickville.

Congratulations to Simone Drew who was the winner of the competition!

Council and the Cooks River Alliance are starting to plan for a new rain garden in Ryan Park. We need to get as much information about the park as possible to help make a better design.

You can help us by taking the Ryan Park Survey - and go in the draw to win a dinner for two in Newtown.
