What is a rain garden?
A rain garden is a specially engineered garden that uses plants and soil to remove pollutants from stormwater before it flow to the nearest waterway or ocean.
In Ryan Park, dirty stormwater from Stanmore Road will be directed into the rain garden where the plants, roots and soil layers will remove rubbish and pollutants such as oil from cars, dog poo, fertilizer and pesticides. Some of the water will soak into the ground and be used by the plants, but the excess clean water will flow to the Cooks River.
Below is the large rain garden built on Marrickville Golf Course near Bruce Street in 2014.
When will the rain garden be built?
The rain garden is scheduled to be built between July 2015 and June 2016. We will keep you informed as the project progresses.
