How does the existing Aquatics Levy fit with this proposed Special Rate Variation?

In 2005/06 the Aquatics Levy was raised to help pay for the Annette Kellerman Aquatic Centre in Enmore and the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre in Petersham. The Marrickville line shows when the 3.5%levy is due to end in 2020/21.

What about the new Marrickville Libary and Community Hub? Wasn't there going to be a special rate variation to pay for this?

Council undertook extensive community engagement in 2011 and 2012 around the proposal to construct a new library and community hub on the old Marrickville Hospital site. The engagement was conducted in three phases. The third phase related to proposed funding of the facility through an SRV (special rate variation).

A new Council was elected in September 2012. In December 2013 this Council resolved to sell the old Marrickville Hospital site to developers in order to unlock the site's value, and deliver the new Marrickville Library and Community Hub without an SRV. Visit Council's website for more information.

How are rates calculated?

Rates are calculated on the land valuation of a property which is multiplied by a 'rate in the dollar'. The land value is provided to Council by the Valuer-General, a State Government authority. Valuer General land valuations are carried out every three years, with the next valuations scheduled for 1 July 2015.
