Background

Council conducted a study in 2012 resulting in the Recreation Needs Research – Strategic Directions for Marrickville report. Developed with significant community input, the report highlighted that ‘walking the dog’ was the second highest recreational activity in Marrickville.

Council’s subsequent Recreation Policy and Strategy, which was adopted by Council in 2013, outlined that additional dog off-leash areas would be investigated to adequately service the need to exercise dogs across the area.

Off leash areas were trialled in ten Marrickville parks in 2013 -14. After community engagement and evaluation, Council decided to make these areas permanently off leash.

What happens next

The evaluation surveys close on Sunday 3 April 2016. Following the evaluation process, a report including the results of the trial will be considered at a forthcoming meeting to determine whether the trial off leash areas will be made permanent and under what conditions. If you leave your contact details in an evaluation survey, we will let you know when this meeting will occur.

The existing trial conditions in the parks will remain in operation until a decision is made.
