Council decided that

1. the trial dog off leash areas at Enmore Park, Henson Park, Marrickville Park, McNeilly Park and Weekley Park are made permanent under the same conditions used during the trial period;

2. the trial of amended timed restrictions for the dog off leash area at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park and Enmore TAFE Park be made permanent;

3. Council undertake investigation of the location and condition of existing bag and bin facilities;

4. Council use the existing capital budget to purchase bag dispensers where appropriate prioritising parks

5. Council remove obsolete signage relating to off leash areas from parks and ensure that new signage is installed in visible locations.

**********UPDATE 25 NOVEMBER 2014**************

Council officers have collated all the feedback gathered during the 12 month trial and combined it with the comprehensive final evaluation survey results.

Council will consider the report on the trial at its meeting on 2 December 2014, to enable it to assess and decide on the future of the dog off leash areas.

The recommendations in the report to Council are

  • The trial dog off leash areas at Enmore Park, Henson Park, Marrickville Park, McNeilly Park and Weekley Park are made permanent under the same conditions used during the trial period;
  • The trial of amended timed restrictions for the dog off leash area at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park and Enmore TAFE Park be made permanent;
  • Council undertake investigation of the location and condition of existing bag and bin facilities; and
  • Council use the existing capital budget to purchase bag dispensers where appropriate prioritising parks that are permanent dog off leash locations.


The trial off-leash areas will remain operational until the elected Council receives the final report at its meeting in December.

Have your say on new off leash dog exercise areas.

Marrickville Council is trialling new off leash dog exercise areas in parks around the Marrickville Local Government Area. 'Walking the dog' is Marrickville's second most popular recreational activity (after 'walking by self or with friends').

Council is currently investigating ways that dogs can be managed in Bandicoot Protection Zones and will work with residents in Petersham and Dulwich Hill to consider options.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Council will monitor the new off leash areas and community feedback throughout the trial. In July/August 2014 Council will undertake a comprehensive community survey that, along with the feedback received, will enable it to assess the trial and decide whether to make the trial areas permanent.
