We seek your input into our Public Domain study!

“In 2023, the Marrickville area is a creative community. It values the people who celebrate, challenge and inspire local identity and sence of place. Innovative urban planning protects the character and heritage of the area. Public spaces are enticing, clean and well maintained, lively and accessible, with a street life that connects the community and welcomes visitors.” Part of ‘Marrickville’s Vision 2023’ from the Marrickville Community Strategic Plan 2023

Council is undertaking a Public Domain Study (PDS) project. The PDS project will assist Marrickville Council in improving the look and feel of Council-run public spaces such as streets, lanes, footpaths and urban squares like Trevallion Plaza, throughout the Marrickville Council area. The PDS project commenced in March 2012 and is intended to be completed by November 2014.

The PDS project has been undertaken in two parts. Funding through the Local Environmental Plan and Development Control Plan review process allowed Council to undertake an earlier sub-project, titled Public Domain Concept Designs, that generated master plans for three areas, Marrickville centre (Illawarra Road), Dulwich Hill Station centre and St Peters ‘triangle’ precinct. Click here to view the Public Domain Concept Designs Report and summary presentations

These master plans will be reviewed based on the main PDS, which will include holding public workshops for these areas, along with the other master plan areas being undertaken. Therefore Council is still seeking public comment on these master plans - see input options below.

The second and main part of the PDS project will include extensive engagement, field surveying, Public Domain Strategy (providing broad strategies for the whole LGA), Policy review, Development Control Plan inclusions, Public Domain Code (providing design principles; guidelines; palette of materials/components; standard works details) and undertaking master plans (including review of the master plans undertaken previously in the Public Domain Concept Designs) as follows:

  • Entire Marrickville centre (Marrickville Road and Illawarra Road), including review
  • Dulwich Hill centre and review of Dulwich Hill Station centre
  • Lewisham centre and Petersham centre (including connection to Petersham Station)
  • Newtown/Enmore centre and review of St Peters 'triangle' precinct
  • Addison Road centre (between Enmore Road and Addison Road Community Centre)
  • 6 selected laneway sites (a mix of commercial, industrial and residential types)

The project will run between September 2013 and November 2014. The proposed schedule is broadly as follows:

  • October 2013 to May 2014 - Field surveying; Public Domain Strategy; Policy review; Development Control Plan inclusions and Public Domain Code
  • February to August 2014 - Community engagement on the project (web Q&As; surveys; reporting to advisory and consultative committees; specific groups; and community workshops in different locations for the master plan at the outset and draft stages; and pop-up street stalls)
  • April to September 2014 - Master plans
  • September to October 2014 - Capital works cost estimates to assist infrastructure planning
  • October to November 2014 - Final exhibition and reporting to Council.

Please provide your input.
