Marrickville Park - Sports Walk of Honour

Marrickville has a rich sporting history with numerous prominent sports women and men having called the area home. To celebrate this, Council is proposing to install a Sports Walk of Honour in Marrickville Park as part of a staged upgrade of the park.

What is the Sports Walk of Honour?

The proposed Walk of Honour will recognise high-achieving, local sportspeople with engraved plaques on the path surrounding Marrickville Oval. One plaque will be reserved for the former Australian test cricketer and coach Bob Simpson who has a strong connection to Marrickville Oval.

Nominate a local sporting great

You can nominate someone for the Walk of Honour using the form below. Nominations are invited for any sport and to be considered for a plaque the nominated person must have:

  • been born in, or resided within, the present Marrickville Local Government Area
  • represented their chosen sport at a national and/or international level;
  • played sport at a professional and/or semi-professional level; and
  • made significant achievements in their chosen sport.

The Walk of Honour will recognise sportspeople, rather than individuals working within the sports industry. Nominations close 24 December 2015.

What happens next?

Council will consider a report of nominations which best meet the criteria at a meeting on 16 February 2016. The Walk of Honour is expected to be installed from March 2016, depending on the outcome of the Council meeting, final approvals and funding allocations.
