What has happened so far?

Council recently conducted a review of the flood map in the Marrickville local government area and identified 2,104 properties as being in the Flood Planning Area (FPA).

To establish which properties are within the FPA, Council has used its Policy For Identifying Properties Subject to Flood Related Development Controls which complies with the NSW Floodplain Development Manual. Based on community consultation to date the Policy has been amended slightly to include information on the methodology adopted.

What has happened so far?

Council recently conducted a review of the flood map in the Marrickville local government area and identified 2,104 properties as being in the Flood Planning Area (FPA).

To establish which properties are within the FPA, Council has used its Policy For Identifying Properties Subject to Flood Related Development Controls which complies with the NSW Floodplain Development Manual. Based on community consultation to date the Policy has been amended slightly to include information on the methodology adopted.

The impact to properties included in the FPA is that future developments may need to include flood prevention measures like raising the floor level.

The updated flood planning controls are part of draft Marrickville Local Environmental Plan 2011 and Marrickville Development Control Plan 2011 Amendment No.2 .

These amendments were put on public exhibition in late 2014 to allow the community to comment. This exhibition period has now been extended by Council at its meeting of 3 March 2015 to allow further engagement to take place. Submissions can be made until 31 March 2015 by filling in the form at the bottom of this page or by writing to Council.

All Councils are required by the NSW State Government to undertake studies to determine what land has the potential to be affected by flooding. This is to ensure that new developments are adequately protected and do not make flooding worse.

    At its meeting on 7 July 2015, Council adopted final draft versions of the Flood Planning Area map and Flood Liable Land Area map. These maps, which are part of the adopted final draft of Amendment No. 2 for Marrickville Local Environmental Plan (MLEP) 2011 and Marrickville Development Control Plan (MDCP) 2011, have been forwarded to the Department of Planning & Environment (DP&E) for review and approval. It is anticipated that LEP/DCP Amendment No. 2 (including the flood maps) will come into force before the end of 2015.
