Improving Pedestrian Access at Cardigan Street, Stanmore - proposed pedestrian crossings

Next year Council proposes to improve pedestrian access at the traffic lights at the intersection of Cardigan Street with Salisbury Road Stanmore by installing additional pedestrian crossings to improve pedestrian access and safety. 

The proposed changes to the traffic lights are a long standing community request for the installation of pedestrian crossings at the existing traffic lights.

Changes to the traffic lights are expected to be installed in the first half of 2015. As part of the work, Council will:

  • Install three new pedestrian crossings – two across Cardigan Street and one across Salisbury Road to improve pedestrian access and safety

  • Build new kerb ramps in Salisbury Road at the new crossings

  • Improve existing cycling facilities by providing expanded bicycle storage areas on both approaches of Cardigan Street to Salisbury Road

  • Remove the existing “No Right” turn sign for southbound traffic on Cardigan Street

  • Remove existing “Left Turn on Red” signs in both Salisbury Road and Cardigan Street

  • Retain the current on-street parking restrictions

  • Replace any old or damaged street signs and repainted faded lines, and

  • Send you notice of the works and more information prior to works commencing.

What happens next?


The proposal will be considered by Council’s Pedestrian, Cyclist and Traffic Calming Advisory Committee at its meeting to be held on 11 December 2014.  The recommendations from this Committee meeting will then be referred to Council’s Infrastructure, Planning and Environmental Services Committee at its meeting to be held on 3 February 2014. All comments made will be taken into consideration by Council prior to finalising the plans.
