Henson Park Lighting Upgrade

Background

The existing sportsfield lighting at Henson Park uses lamps and components dating back to the 1970s that can no longer be sourced. The quality of light illuminating the field does not meet the relevant Australian standards for AFL or rugby league use and there are also issues with light spill to surrounding homes. Council engaged a lighting and electrical consultant to determine the best options for the lighting upgrade. The lighting upgrade works are being funded collaboratively by the Newtown Jets Rugby League Football Club (through a NSW Footy Facilities Fund grant), AFL NSW/ ACT and Marrickville Council.

The upgrade will deliver:

  • better lighting for sports players and spectators
  • lower maintenance costs
  • greater energy efficiency
  • reduced light spill to surrounding homes

Marrickville Climate Change Plan 2015–2025

Council is working towards a target of 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. The upgrade of lighting at Henson Park will include new metal halide lamps that are expected to reduce energy consumption by over 60% and will complement other energy saving initiatives in the area including:

  • an ongoing program of replacement of street lights to Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology which are much more energy efficient and require lower maintenance than older style lights

  • upgrade of Council’s buildings including solar power installations at Council’s Depot facility

  • effective management of Council’s vehicle fleet and implementation of alternative transport options including bicycles
