The inner west community and local councils have been campaigning for over 10 years to complete the GreenWay. The NSW Government and the Inner West Council have secured funding towards the costs, this will unlock approximately 3ha of open space not currently accessible to the community. For the first time you'll be able to walk or ride easily and safely the length of the route.

    Construction on $27 million of high priority works starte in 2020, and is expected to be completed by 2023.

    How we developed the Master Plan with community input

    In consultation with the community and stakeholders, Council developed the Cooks to Cove GreenWay Master Plan to guide the delivery of landscaping and infrastructure within the GreenWay corridor over the next 10 - 15 years. It was adopted by Council in August 2018

    The Master Plan includes new and upgraded areas along the GreenWay:

    • A new bridge over the Cooks River

    • Improved natural areas and public open spaces in the light rail corridor near Hercules Street in Dulwich Hill

    • A new accessible shared path along the length of the corridor

    • Creation of new natural areas and public open spaces in the light rail corridor near Lewisham West

    • Safer crossings under major roads

    • Upgraded parklands and new natural areas along the Hawthorne Canal and much more.

    The Master Plan includes proposals for $57 million of works to be implemented over the long term. Construction is expected to start in 2020 on $27 million of high priority works, which are anticipated to be completed by 2023.

    Additional works outlined in the Plan will be delivered in a staged approach over the next 10 to 15 years, as more funding becomes available.

    The Concept Design

    Based on the Master Plan, Council developed a draft Concept Design which was put on public exhibition for community comment in March 2019.

    This included:

    • Upgrade of the Bay Run separated path, lighting and seawall from the UTS Haberfield club to Lilyfield Road
    • Upgraded open space on the Lilyfield Road bridge
    • Upgrade of the GreenWay shared path and lighting in Richard Murden Reserve
    • New open space in the light rail corridor at Lewisham West, including a new dog off leash area and ecological spaces
    • A new shared path and lighting through the light rail corridor between Weston Street and Johnson Park, including a new tunnel under Davis Street
    • A new shared path and lighting through the light rail corridor between Johnson park and New Canterbury Road including a tunnel under Constitution Road and an underpass below New Canterbury Road
    • New open space in the light rail corridor behind Hercules Street including naturalised creek and ecological areas
    • Upgrades of the GreenWay route along Weston Street, Ness Avenue and Garnet Street

    The comments were considered and incorporated into the final Greenway Concept Design where appropriate.

    What are the Detailed Designs for Bay Run upgrades between UTS Haberfield Rowers Club and Lilyfield Road

    The draft designs show the proposed upgrades, as well as the diversions required during construction. Whilst pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained as much as possible, for significant periods of the construction it will be necessary for the public to divert through Robson Park and along Dobroyd and Hawthorne Parades.
