Marrickville West Eco Water Garden

Overview

Council and Marrickville West Public School joined forces with the school’s Parents and Citizens Association, Marrickville West Community Gardeners, Riverside Crescent Subcatchment Community Group, the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities and other local people to build the outdoor classroom and children's play area that includes a rain garden, tank, sand pits and improved landscaping in the School's playground.

The rain garden filters out pollution in stormwater runoff from the Henson Street area that normally ends up in the Cooks River. The water is stored in the tank to use for irrigation.

What's happened?

Construction was completed in March with school children, community gardeners and other community volunteers finishing the project at the planting day on 23 March.

Officially Open

The Marrickville West Eco Water Garden was officially opened by NSW Member for Summer Hill, Jo Haylen MP, Inner West Mayor, Darcy Byrne, and School Principal, Ruth Bradfield-Ling on 3 April 2018 . Aunty Phemie Bostock acknowledged the traditional owners and the school captains also spoke to guests about the benefits of the project.
