How does local democracy work?

    Representative democracy

Every four years you have the right to vote in local government elections.

You elect your representatives who form the governing body for Council. The elected Council develops and implements policies, programs and long-term strategic plans, ensures financial stability, monitors performance and makes decisions to direct the affairs of Council. The elected Council is the final decision maker and is accountable to you – the community.

    Participatory democracy

Participating in projects that impact you is how you can shape the future you want to see for the Inner West. Your views are reported to the elected representatives, making up a part of the evidence base used to inform their final decisions.

    What is community engagement?

Community engagement is the process by which Inner West residents, business owners and visitors influence Council’s decision-making. Participating in projects that impact you is how you can shape the future you want to see for the Inner West. Your views are reported to the elected representatives, making up a part of the evidence base used to inform their final decisions.

    How will you engage me?

Depending on what you can influence, budget and time, we will identify the method that is most appropriate. Often, we will combine being out in the community (such as on site) and online (feedback forms) to meet different needs of impacted groups.

We assess this on a per-project basis. Our commitment is to ensure engagement is authentic, transparent, planned, tailored and inclusive,  and consistent across the organisation.
