Council is proposing to remove the existing crossing on Victoria Road at the intersection of Edgeware Road and build a new raised crossing approximately twelve metres away to increase safety for all pedestrians, especially families with children at local primary schools.

The existing crossing was identified in a Road Safety Audit by former Marrickville Council in 2015 and in the Marrickville East Local Area Traffic Management Plan which was on public exhibition in September 2016. Inner West Council has recently received Roads and Maritime Services grant funding to help undertake the works.

The proposed works include:

• Installing a new raised pedestrian crossing;
• Removing the existing zebra crossing;
• Providing right and left turn lanes in Victoria Road
• Creating landscaped kerb extensions;
• Reconstructing the footpaths;
• Relocating the drainage pit and extending the drainage system;
• Adjusting the lighting near the pedestrian crossing;
• Installing associated signage, replacing any damaged signs and repairing faded road markings; and
• Resurfacing and repairing the road pavement where shown.

Parking changes

This proposal would result in the loss of two on-street parking spaces.

What happens next?

All comments will be included in a report to the Local Traffic Committee on 2 November 2017 and the recommendations from the committee will be considered by Council at a meeting on 21 November 2017. Council will notify everyone who made a submission.

When is the work planned for?

The works are planned for this financial year, depending on the outcome of the engagement process, final approvals and funding allocations. Residents will be notified of a commencement date for any proposed works.
