New Canterbury Road & Herbert Street intersection, Dulwich Hill – improving safety


Council is proposing to improve safety at the intersection of New Canterbury Road and Herbert Street, Dulwich Hill by

  • expanding the footpath through kerb extensions on both corners
  • installing a pedestrian refuge.
  • Installing two driveways for access to the MAD-ERA Automotive Repair workshop to and from both New Canterbury Road and Herbert Street.

This will reduce the width of Herbert Street at the intersection, increase visibility and slow traffic turning from New Canterbury Road, which will make it safer for pedestrians to cross.

In addition to the new intersection kerb layout, stage two of the works will also include:

In addition to the new intersection kerb layout, stage two of the works will also include:

  • landscaping and street furniture at the kerb extensions
  • tree planting.

There is no change to on-street parking.

These improvements are part of the Dulwich Hill South Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) Scheme which was developed with community input and adopted by Council in 2010.

What happens next?

Council’s Pedestrian, Cyclist and Traffic Calming Advisory Committee will consider the proposal at its meeting on 8 October 2015. The Committee’s recommendations will be referred to Council’s Infrastructure, Planning and Environmental Services Committee meeting on 3 November 2015. All comments received will be taken into consideration by Council prior to finalising the plans.

The improvement works are scheduled in this financial year.
